Free chapter from Homestead Builds

A 4 by 8 bed built to hold the soil, for years.

The side boards go on the inside of the posts, so the weight of the soil pushes against the frame instead of the screws. Complete cut list and drawings. Free.

Cedar raised beds full of nasturtiums and basil on the Rhodes farm

What is in the download

The whole chapter. Nothing held back.

The complete raised bed build, printable, with the cut list and drawings.

Boards on the inside

Rebekah's dad designed it so the side boards sit inside the frame, giving the beds lasting strength to hold the weight of the soil.

A 4 by 8 growing area

A good size for square foot gardening, and you can reach the middle from either side.

Less soil to buy

Fill the bottom up to the first board with wood, ideally rotting logs, and it breaks down into soil over time. Filling the rest takes 41.3 cubic feet, or 1.53 cubic yards.

Fits the chicken tractor

The chicken tractor is sized to sit right on top, so a few hens can clear and till a finished bed.

  • Cedar is recommended because it is non-toxic, light and rot-resistant. Pine works on a budget with a wood finish.
  • Optional pergola with hooks for vining crops.
  • Optional removable fence panels to keep dogs and kids out, which also stack up as a trellis.
  • Placement and spacing tips for laying out a full garden plot.

Who is handing you these plans

Nineteen inches in one week.

I am Justin Rhodes. We raise our food on our farm in western North Carolina. Our house sits at the bottom of Burl Holler, and one year we got 19 inches of rain in a single week. I was out in the front yard with a shovel digging trenches to save Rebekah's tomatoes. She had been asking for raised beds for years and I kept saying they were too much of an investment. That flood settled it. We built seven cedar beds on this design, and raised bed gardening is now my favorite, by far.
